Historical Perspective
Throughout redemptive history, cities have played a pivotal role in the battle to advance the kingdom of God. Since the apostle Paul, we see that one of the Church’s primary strategies to reach the lost has been to plant churches in urban centers. From Jerusalem to Antioch, from Ephesus to Rome, cities have always been a focal point for gospel-centered movements.
This focus on reaching cities that we see in the early church in the first century must be recovered again.
Cities have enormous influence on the culture, politics, economics, technology, and even religion of their entire nation. Cities like London, Hong Kong, New York City, Kuala Lumpur, Buenos Aires, Singapore, Mumbai, and Boston have more cross-cultural influence, especially on youth culture, than even national and local governments.
State College, although small in size, is a melting pot of nations and cultures. People from all over the world gather hear at Penn State to receive an education and this provides a unique opportunity to win souls and equip people who would finish the task of world evangelism (Matt 24:14). For these reasons, we are committed to praying for the city and the college so that we may see the glory of God revealed and impact lives for Jesus Christ and see it carried forth throughout the world.
